Despite having its roots a little south in Williamsburg, Jimmy’s in Greenpoint has found a good home. Located at the intersection of Franklin St. and Calyer St, it offers a first point of entry from the south west Greenpoint. They specialize in soul food, sandwiches, and a small but powerful cocktail list.
To keep things focused on the food, the interior is simple. Tables and booths fill up the space, with a fun and slightly quirky bar on the back wall. You seat yourself when you walk in, and depending on the time of day, you may have to wait a little while. They offer select outdoor seating in the warmer months, but the open setting controls volume level well inside.
Their breakfast menu is the best part of their offerings. Indulgent favorites like Chicken & Waffles sit tandem with Veggie Hash. There is no question the menu skews slightly towards ‘filling’ – where most plates will keep you satisfied for hours. The sides are usually selected to fit their dish best, but you can order them separately for a decent slice of cash (5 bucks each).
The service is friendly, young, and capable. They enjoy the space and will help you out when needed. They tend to have only a few servers at a time, so it really shows how well they can handle their time.
Part of the reason Jimmy’s is on this list is their consistency. We’ve never had a bad meal there, and absolutely never a bad time. They also deliver which is badass. A (sort of) local joint where the food is plentiful in a simple space made for a good time.
We recommend the Chicken & Waffles or the Tater Heaven. But really, any sandwich will blow your mind as well.
